Kyle Smith was diagnosed with AML (acute myeloid leukemia) on January 11, 2009. He endured four months of intense chemotherapy before becoming the recipient of a bone marrow transplant on May 12, 2009. He returned home in mid-August and did very well. Then on November 16, relapse was confirmed and he was left with very few options. He had another round of chemotherapy, but his bone marrow wasn't strong enough to withstand the chemo and for two months he lived without producing cells.

On January 14, 2010 he began a trial drug. Kyle was one of six children in the nation to be on this drug. After two months his blood counts started coming up and he started feeling like a kid again. Soon after, his counts started to fall and on April 5, he was taken off the experimental drug as it was no longer helping him to fight the leukemia. He was then placed in the care of hospice under the supervision of Kentucky Children's Hospital. Kyle gained his wings and entered into the kingdom of Heaven late on August 1, 2010 after a nearly 20 month long battle.

Kyle's Wish is an organization dedicated to carrying the torch that Kyle has passed on to us, to bring joy to the lives of other children who are suffering from hardships that no child should ever have to endure. Kyle's strength, courage, compassion, and selflessness will live on as long as there are those that pick up his torch and carry on the legacy he has left behind.
