Dominic Miranda is a quiet boy, who prefers to show his compassion and strength by helping others. He also loves to play football so when his foot became swollen one summer weekend, it seemed reasonable to believe the doctors when they told him that it was a double fracture on two toes. Dominic’s foot appeared to have healed by the following fall – he played sports as usual and had a great football season. Then in early December, the same area of his foot swelled again and causing Dominic to be in pain. X-rays were performed and this time it was diagnosed as cellulitis with doctors reassuring Dominic’s mom Bianca that it was nothing to worry about. To everyone’s surprise, 45 minutes into Dominic’s surgery, he was diagnosed with cancer – Ewing’s Sarcoma.

Since his diagnosis, Dominic has endured nine months of chemotherapy and his right foot has been partially amputated. He undergoes physical therapy and will need another surgery on his foot to attend to some residual issues.

Bianca hopes that despite possible physical limitations caused by the surgeries, that Dominic will be able to play sports, finish school and even help to raise awareness for childhood cancer. She continues to be amazed at her son who never holds a grudge and calmly accepts and understands the impact of the disease even when she does not.

As of January 2015, Dominic is now 40 months NED (No Evidence of Disease) and will be scanned every 6 months. He skateboards every chance he gets!
