The Childhood Cancer Blog

How your support helped in 2013 and gearing up for 2014!

Here we are once again, it's the last day of the year – are you wondering where 2013 went? We sure are, but one thing’s for sure – it was a banner year for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation. Thanks to you, ALSF raised more than $16 million in 2013. That’s $16 million from lemonade stands, other kinds of fundraising events, ALSF special events, Team Lemon races, coin collecting, school programs, donations in the mail and a number of other activities that our supporters have selflessly taken the time to participate in to get us one step closer to finding cures for all childhood cancers.

Thank you for all of your support of the fight against childhood cancer this past year. We are excited, motivated and inspired for an even bigger and better 2014!

PS – There’s still time to make a contribution to 2013! Make a tax-deductible donation before midnight tonight (Dec. 31, 2013) and end the year on a high note!

One more look back before we move forward – a few highlights of what you helped to accomplish in 2013 through your support of Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation. Thank you!

IN 2013....
More than $16 million raised
  • This translates to 320,000 hours of research looking for better treatments and cures for kids with cancer
107 new childhood cancer research grants funded
More potential breakthroughs from ALSF funded research!
  • Early results from a clinical trial at Duke University Medical Center led in part by ALSF grantee Matthias Gromeier, MD has found that a modified version of the poliovirus is proving effective in treating patients with glioblastoma. For the first patient enrolled in the trial, her lime sized tumor shrank to the size of a pea.
New grant category – reachin' toward the clinic!
  • A new ALSF research grant category was developed (the Reach Award) with the intent to help move projects into clinical trials, faster.

ALSF Travel For Care Program expands
  • In 2013 alone, the ALSF Travel For Care Program provided more than 90 flights, 400 nights of lodging and 3,000 gas cards to help families travel for their child's treatment.
The Million Mile Run!
  • The Million Mile Run, the first worldwide event during childhood cancer awareness month was a huge success! We didn’t quite make it to our goal of completing one million miles during the month of September, but more than 5,000 supporters worldwide participated either individually or by creating teams and ran or walked nearly 225,000 miles in just one month. More than half a million dollars was raised in addition to immeasurable awareness.

    Happy New Year!
