Happy National Lemonade Day!

Home » Blog

Not to be confused with our annual Alex's Lemonade Days in June, National Lemonade Day is held each year in August in celebration of everyone’s favorite summertime beverage: Lemonade!

At ALSF, we think every day is a great day for making lemonade. Our founder, Alex Scott, taught all of us that when life gives you lemons, you make lemonade!

Whether you like your lemonade plain jane or with a twist of something special, lemonade is the perfect icy cold treat to lift your spirits.

During Alex's Lemonade Days a few years ago, our celebrity supporters Chef Alex Guarnaschelli and Food Network star Melissa D'Arabian shared their twists on the classic summertime beverage with us. Give their lemonade recipes a try in celebration of National Lemonade Day or at your next Alex’s Lemonade Stand to raise money for childhood cancer research! What’s your favorite way to turn lemons into lemonade?

Melissa’s Orange-Raspberry Lemonade
4 cups water 1/2 cup ice cubes
3/4 cup sugar 1/2 cup frozen raspberries 3/4 cup fresh lemon juice
1/2 cup freshly-squeezed
orange juice

In a small saucepan, bring 1 cup of water and the sugar to a boil; simmer and stir until the sugar is dissolved, about 2 minutes. Remove from the heat and let the syrup cool completely.
In a pitcher, mix lemon juice, orange juice, cooled syrup, and remaining 3 cups of water. Add the ice cubes and frozen raspberries. Stir and serve.

Yield: Just over a quart. Can easily be scaled up for larger batches.

Alex’s Lemon Lime Lemonade
1 cup (8 ounces) fresh lemon juice
1/2 cup (4 ounces) fresh lime juice
1/2 cup (4 ounces) honey
1/4 scant teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper 1 lemon, sliced into 1/2-inch thick rounds
1 lime, sliced into 1/2-inch thick rounds
1 cup (8 ounces) chilled lemon-lime soda

1. In a large container with a fitted lid, combine the lemon juice, lime juice, honey. Cover and shake
it to blend. Refrigerate for at least one hour. Taste.

2. Fill a pitcher with ice cubes and the slices of lemon and lime. Using a long wooden spoon, stir to blend while pouring in the lemon lime soda. Stir, reaching down into the bottom of the pitcher with the spoon, until all of the ingredients are blended. Serve immediately.

Note: If making larger batches, make some ice cubes from the lemonade mix. That way the lemonade ice cubes won’t dilute the flavor of the lemonade!
