In 1977, Dorothy experienced medical issues that led her doctors to suspect she had pediatric cancer. Though she ultimately was not diagnosed, she remembers her time in the hospital playing and coloring with other kids, the pain from her surgery, and her 6-year-old roommate who did not survive.
Despite her personal connection to the cause, Dorothy did not get involved with Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) until recently when childhood cancer re-entered her life. Her friend lost their 4-year-old daughter to leukemia. Now Dorothy gives monthly in hopes that her consistent donations will add up to cures.
“I am not able to give a ton, but I decided this time when I saw a fundraising plea, I was COMMITTING. I hope my consistent donations will eventually come to mean something and childhood cancer is eradicated. No more losing little kids. May they all get to grow up!” said Dorothy.
Dorothy is a member of the One Cup at a Time Club, ALSF's community of monthly donors who are turning steady, simple giving into bold progress against childhood cancer.
Inspired by the spirit of Alex Scott and her lemonade stands, the support of monthly donors adds up to lifesaving cures and critical family services, one month at a time. To date, nearly 2,000 members have joined, contributing more than $2 million to the fight against childhood cancer.
With September’s Childhood Cancer Awareness Month right around the corner, there’s never been a better time to join.
Why Monthly Giving Matters
Lyndsey and Mark have been on the sidelines of childhood cancer as those they’ve loved have battled through diagnosis and treatment. Like many others, they have friends and family members who have either experienced childhood cancer themselves or had a child of their own battling cancer. “It's gutting to think about,” they shared.
Mark and Lyndsey decided to give monthly because they feel it’s a cause that deserves constant support. This way, they feel like they’re making a difference in the fight against childhood cancer all the time, not just when they happen to think about it.
“For anyone thinking about giving monthly themselves? It's worth it and it doesn't need to be a huge amount of money – simply a way to feel connected to and supportive of the cause," said Mark.
Each month, the reliable support of One Cup at a Time members helps ALSF plan with confidence, allowing us to say “yes” to more research projects and ensure that promising science doesn't go unfunded, especially in these uncertain times.
Giving Benefits the Giver, Too
Chris is a father to two girls and sees how difficult everyday parenting can be – and is moved by what families go through when cancer enters the picture. He gives monthly to support families who are facing the unimaginable to honor their strength and resolve. But, he has also seen meaningful, unexpected benefits by staying connected to the cause, the stories, and having a front seat to the hope his donation has funded.
