Josie was 5 months old when she was diagnosed with juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia (JMML), a rare pediatric leukemia. Of the kids diagnosed, only half reach long-term remission. There just haven’t been effective treatments for kids with JMML, until now. A brand-new clinical trial offered an upfront treatment: a potential cure without long-term side effects.
Thanks to an ALSF Center of Excellence Grant, Josie could access the treatment at her home hospital in Cincinnati. The treatment is working. And Josie continues to shine. “She is the happiest girl in the world,” said Kaitlin, Josie’s mom. Read more.
Before entering the trial, Josie’s doctors used a specialized test called DNA methylation. This test allowed the trial team to determine which arm of the trial would be best for Josie. One arm, for kids with the highest risk of relapsing, required a few months of treatment on the trial drugs, followed by an intense, physically demanding stem cell transplant. The other arm, for kids with a lower risk of relapsing, took away the need for a stem cell transplant, but required 12 months of treatment on the trial drugs.
Josie was low-risk. Each month, she goes to clinic for her treatment, labs, and to check-in with the oncologist. And thus far every scan has shown her leukemia reducing and it shows: Josie is a happy, chatty toddler.
