Dear Alex,
It has been a long time since I wrote to you. It is not for lack of thinking about you; of course I think of you often. Sometimes I think about the girl you were and all the sweet and fun times we had together—it still makes me smile every time I picture you laughing.
Other times, I am haunted by all you endured in your life—when I look back there are times all I can see is how terribly hard your life was. It makes me sad, and makes me worry if I was the best mom I could be at those moments. Did I say the right things and offer what you needed in those moments? I like to think I did but I know how busy life was then, not only with the normal chaos of having 4 young children, but with wanting to make sure Patrick, Eddie, and Joey also had the mom they needed. I guess what I am trying to say is that I truly hope you felt the comfort, love, and support that I tried so hard to offer. You deserved that and so much more.
You gave me so much in your eight years, from sweet and silly moments to your quiet strength when it was needed, and my most cherished moments of family fun times and your many words of wisdom. You taught me so much about life and resilience, lessons that have not only stayed with me but have become part of me. And you continue to give and teach—not just me, but others.

Your life has inspired others in countless ways. Your lemonade stand has given hope and “helped doctors help kids like you,” just as you wanted! We have met many of the families you have helped, the kids who are living their lives cancer free. It is such a joy to meet them and I am certain if you met them, your smile would light up the room!
I am sorry you aren’t here to share those moments with us. My grief is filled with regrets for moments missed and what we lost as a family—we have a hole in our lives that no amount of hope and inspiration can fill. But the most painful regret is all you have missed out on in the past 21 years, all the living you didn’t get to do. I like to think you have been here with us, watching and guiding us along the way, enjoying the good times, and telling us to keep going in the tough times.
I am so lucky to feel your inspiration and guidance every day in the work of the Foundation (your Foundation!). You showed us what is possible when we think bigger and set ambitious goals. You set in motion a movement that has been a gift to be part of, not just for me but for many people who have taken this cause into their hearts. You started an amazing lemonade stand; and your life has left an amazing legacy. What an honor it is to be part of it. I am so proud of you, and I hope you would be proud of yourself too.
I love you and I miss you,
Mom
