We are halfway through the month of September and halfway through The Million Mile, the largest childhood cancer awareness challenge that funds researchers so they can find better treatments and more cures for kids battling cancer. Now is a great time to check in and see how your mile logging is going.
It is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and time for Alex’s Million Mile (AMM).
AMM is the largest childhood cancer awareness challenge that funds critical, innovative research. Childhood cancer families help lead the charge by forming teams, raising awareness, logging miles and fundraising.
A million miles may seem like a far distance—but families battling childhood cancer would go a million miles and more for cures for their children.
Good music always makes the miles go faster. Our founder, Alexandra “Alex” Scott loved music, too. Back when Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation was just beginning, a neighbor of the Scott family wanted to support ALSF. He owned a record company and donated a whole bunch of CDs. Alex’s Greatest Hits, which contained 12 feel-good songs, were included in early Lemonade Stand kits.

“Dad, so you’re telling me I beat half the nation’s best on a half-broken leg.”
Arnav was riding home from the doctor after being diagnosed with osteosarcoma, the most common type of childhood bone cancer. The cancer was in his left leg.
“No, I want to compete,” Arnav said as he picked his bike up off the ground.
Despite having just fallen off his cycle and shattered his helmet, Arnav was insistent on finishing the cycling competition. Race officials cautioned him against continuing, but there was no stopping the persistent teen. Off he went, finishing 9th in the race despite his early tumble.
That same will to barrel forward, no matter the obstacle, would drive Arnav during a far more grueling fight of his life against childhood cancer.
There have been several times during her battle with childhood cancer, that Jordan Vincent has not been able to walk. It has never stopped her from going the distance for a cure. Jordan, who is now 18, has been slaying diffuse neural glial tumors since she was 4-years-old. Each year during Alex’s Million Mile, Jordan has found a way to log miles, even if it is just one mile in her wheelchair—or several laps walked with her family.
Rob Schuster, our revenue staff accountant, keeps track of donations for the Foundation. His numbers job is one we could not manage without. With every donation he logs, Rob gets us one step closer to cures for childhood cancer. Today, Rob shares how he is adding up the miles and the hope for The Million Mile.
