Resources and Support for Childhood Cancer Families During COVID-19

As the COVID-19 virus continues to spread throughout our childhood cancer communities, everyone is continuing to experience rapidly changing circumstances. One thing that isn’t changing: kids with cancer still need treatment. Families are now facing additional burdens in the face of this situation.

Families need safe locations near hospitals to stay isolated during treatment. Traveling becomes more difficult, as crowded spaces like airports or public transportation can increase risk of exposure. Many families, some of whom already rely on one income, are also facing the economic strains of COVID-19.

That is why Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) is making critical changes to our Travel For Care program to directly address the unique needs of our families:

  1. Families are concerned about utilizing hospitality housing, such as Ronald McDonald House, including some locations that have closed. Effective immediately, our Travel For Care guideline requiring families to first utilize hospitality housing will be temporarily waived.
  2. Families who are traveling to their home hospital for standard treatment and need assistance will also be considered for support.
  3. We have established a temporary fund for families to provide a one-time grocery assistance of $300 to families that are approved. Families must be receiving active treatment and our standard income guideline applies to this program: estimated annual household income at the time of request must be less than $100,000. Please note, this application can be accessed by healthcare professionals only through our secure portal.

These changes are intended to be temporary and will be accessible through June 30, 2021. At that time, we will evaluate the available information on COVID-19 and decide if they should continue. All applications will still be evaluated for approval on a case-by-case basis. As always, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at [email protected] .

ALSF remains committed to protecting the health and wellbeing of all childhood cancer families. If you want to help ensure families continue to receive the support they need, please consider donating below.
