Childhood Cancer Survivors
Glossary
acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), a serious condition that occurs when alveoli in the lungs are damaged and can no longer provide oxygen to the body
bronchodilating medication, medication that relieves the symptoms of lung conditions such as asthma, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) by quickly relaxing the muscle bands that tighten around the airways (bronchi) and allowing more air to come in and out of the lungs so that breathing requires less effort.
fibrosis, build-up of scar tissue
fractions, delivery of radiation in small amounts over the course of a week
hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (also known as stem cell transplant) formerly known as bone marrow transplant, a procedure that involves administering healthy stem cells (e.g., bone marrow, cord blood, or peripheral blood) to patients after the bone marrow has been destroyed by disease, chemotherapy, or radiation
mantle radiation, a radiation technique used from the 1970s to the 1990s which treated a large area of the neck, chest, armpits and mediastinum (area between the lungs) in order to cover all areas with cancer involvement. This technique is rarely used today in current treatment.
obstructive lung disease, lung disease that occurs due to blockages or obstructions in the airways that narrow the airways and make it hard to exhale all the air in your lungs. The main symptom is shortness of breath.
pneumococcal vaccine, vaccine given to help prevent or reduce effects of pneumonia bacteria
pneumonitis, inflammation of the tissue of the lungs. This inflammation can worsen if a person develops lung infections, such as pneumonia.
pulmonary fibrosis, formation of scar tissue in the lungs which makes the lungs stiffer and less elastic and reduces lung capacity, making it more difficult to breathe
pulmonary function tests (PFTs), a group of tests that measure how well your lungs work; how well you breathe; and effectiveness of your lungs in bringing oxygen to the rest of your body
radiation pneumonitis, pneumonitis (inflammation of the lungs) resulting from receiving high-dose radiation to the lung area
restrictive lung disease, lung disease that reduces lungs’ ability to expand and reduces amount of air the lungs can hold; shortness of breath is a major symptom
scoliosis, curvature of the spine
vaping, use of a battery-operated device to inhale an aerosol that may contain nicotine, flavors, or other chemicals
