Chapter 10. Hormone-Producing Glands

LISA BASHORE, PhD, APRN, CPNP-PC, CPON

The future enters into us, in order to transform itself in us, long before it happens.

— Rainer-Maria Rilke, Letters to a Young Poet

SOME GLANDS IN OUR BODY produce substances called hormones and are part of the endocrine system. Hormones are released in tiny amounts, but travel throughout the body to direct complicated processes such as growth, puberty, reaction to stress, temperature regulation, and urine output. Damage in the balance of these chemical messengers can profoundly affect both health and quality of life. See Figure 10-1 Male and female glands of the endocrine system.
