Childhood Cancer Survivors
Glossary
anxiety, a normal human reaction to stressful situations when one feels nervous, has worried thoughts and/or feelings of dread, and some physical changes like heart pounding or sweating. Anxiety usually is temporary and ends when the stressful situation is over. But for some, anxiety can persist and can even get worse over time. If anxiety persists and begins to interfere with school, work, and social situations, one should seek help from a healthcare professional or psychologist. There are effective treatments for persistent anxiety.
depression, a profound and prolonged feeling of sadness and lack of energy that prevents one from seeking appropriate care and engaging in activities of daily life and enjoyment from once pleasurable experiences
post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a disorder that develops in some people who have experienced a shocking, scary, or dangerous event that disrupts their life and emotions (fear, anxiety, depression); people may experience a range of reactions after trauma, and most people recover from initial symptoms over time. Those who continue to experience problems may be diagnosed with PTSD.
psychologist, a trained mental health professional who helps people learn healthy ways to handle mental health challenges. They can help people living with specific conditions, like depression or anxiety, or those who are going through a tough time in life, like grieving the loss of a loved one
survivor guilt, feeling guilty or shame over surviving cancer while others have lost their lives; and having the feeling of pressure to accomplish or excel in life since they have been given the gift of life; feeling guilty because they just want to live an ordinary normal life
