amblyopia or lazy eye, type of poor vision usually in just one eye resulting from a weakness in one eye over the other. The brain does not recognize one eye over the other and causes poor vision in one of the eyes
audiologist, a professional who uses technology, creative problem solving, and social skills to help them identify and treat hearing, balance, tinnitus, and other audiology disorders
cataracts, when the lens of the eye becomes opaque
central vision, the detailed vision used for reading
cerumen glands, glands that produce earwax
cryotherapy, freezing treatment
diuretics, medications that help the body get rid of excess water
enucleation, surgical removal of the eye
FM system, a special type of assistive listening device that operates like a tiny radio station with its own frequency. One part is a microphone that the speaker wears (teacher in a class). As the teacher speaks, the microphone sends a signal to a receiver that you wear on your ears or in your hearing aids and the speaker’s voice goes directly to you, making it easier to hear.
glaucoma, increased pressure within the eye
graft-versus-host disease (GvHD), a systemic disorder that occurs when the graft’s immune cells recognize the host as foreign and attack the recipient’s body cells. Graft refers to transplanted, or donated tissue, and host refers to the tissues of the recipient. It is a common complication after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant
keratitis, inflammation of the cornea
otolaryngologist, medical doctor who diagnosis and treats diseases of the ear, nose, and throat
patching therapy, patching the good eye to improve vision in the eye that is not being used
peripheral visual fields, side vision
photocoagulation, laser treatment
punctal ligation, surgery to treat severe dry eyes which closes the tear draining ducts
pure tone audiometry, the use of earphones placed on the child, who is then asked to raise a hand if they hear a beep
tinnitus, ringing in the ears
total body irradiation (TBI), a type of radiation therapy that delivers radiation to the entire body commonly used for the treatment of certain blood cancers before a bone marrow transplant
vertigo, dizziness or sensation of “drifting in space”
